BraneWorldsEpisode 1: Lewton’s Last Case

A hardboiled-looking detective narrates that his name is Lewton Slade and he's a private investigator living in Nu-merica City in the year X47, or rather, he was. Business had been slow, but this was nothing new. In a city with more private investigators than cops, finding a worthwhile case was half the challenge. Of course, he wasn't in that job for the money, he was in it for the action, the mystery and the dames. Not to say that he didn't have a sense of justice as well; unlike the cops, as a P.I. he had the freedom to investigate as he pleased, which is what he was doing on a rainy night. There had been a series of gruesome murders around the warehouse district, horribly mutilated corpses, covered in burns, with missing limbs and deep gouges in their flesh, almost as if something had been eating them. The cops thought it was the work of a serial killer, but Lewton wasn't so sure. Whatever it was, he was going to find it and put an end to it. Lewton wandered the warehouse district, searching for clues that would lead him to the killer. Looking back on it, he was acting pretty recklessly. He had seen some strange things in his career so he thought he was prepared for anything, but he was wrong. Lewton heard a noise unlike anything he had ever heard. Turning around, he saw a creature lit up the darkness as if a fire burned inside the twisted flesh, raindrops hissing as they boiled instantly upon touching it. Lewton thought it a horror that defied imagination, an impossible combination of animal and insect-like anatomy. Lewton had no doubt that that thing was responsible for the deaths, describing it as like a demon the bible preachers spoke of and certainly nothing natural. Lewton then realized that it wasn't alone as three more identical creatures crawled into view, moving like a pack, skittering towards him with a single purpose. One of the creatures lept at him and Lewton drew his gun on instinct, not knowing if he could get a shot off in time. However, a flash of blue thunder then crossed the creature, killing it and saving Lewton. A lone figure clad in some sort of strange, futuristic white armor descended from the sky. As the figure dropped in front of him, Lewton lied on the ground, unable to comprehend what he was seeing, looking for logic and reason in an unbelievable situation. The creatures swiftly turned their attention to their newest target, who quickly fired off a series of energy shots at them, immediately killing two more. The last one leapt at the warrior figure, who shouted to activate blade. A blade made of pure white light then materialized on their hand, which they used to slice the creature in half. It was over in seconds. The lone figure had taken out all four creatures without fear or hesitation and was now turning their attention towards Lewton. The figure asked him if he was unharmed, but Lewton could only ask in shock what they were. The warrior asked him not to be alarmed by their appearance and explained that they meant him no harm and would answer his questions as far as they were permitted. By saying the words deactivate combat systems, parts of their armor seemed to dissolve into dust. Lewton was surprised to see that this warrior who had fought with such ferocity was, in fact, a woman. The woman introduced herself as Valkyrie Unit 27 of the braneworld Midgard and extended a hand to assist Lewton. He grabbed it, confused at the term braneworld, and asked her if she was some sort of space alien. Valkyrie Unit 27 replied that he misunderstands and tried to figure out how she should explain, then awkwardly apologized and explained she was fairly inexperienced, this being her first time interacting with a civilisation other than her own and she was unsure as to how to conduct herself. Lewton found it odd at the time that someone who could fight so single-mindedly would seem so hesitant and awkward in conversation. 27 then asked if he knew of a nearby secure location she could retreat to, as the sound of her weapon fire may have alerted someone and if the authorities learn of her existence it would cause irreparable damage to the order of that world and she must avoid that at all costs. Finding himself dragged along to the situation, Lewton suggests his office, but started to voice his concern for those creatures. 27 explained they are called the Scourge, a plague-like species which infests many worlds and should not be in this membrane, but recent events must have brought them there. Without vital functions, 27 clarified, their cells would decay rapidly. 27 then asked Lewton to let them make haste to that office he spoke of. By that point, Lewton was starting to think rationally again, enough to realize how ashamed he felt; a lady was asking him for help and he was acting like a complete fool. Regardless of the situation, to him this was inexcusable, so he quickly pulled himself together and accepted to show her the way, but pointed out her armour was going to attract attention if they're seen and asked if she could do something about it. 27 was confused for a brief moment, then realized a mid-level world such as that would have no knowledge of technology such as that. By speaking the words deactivate nano-armor, 27's armor disappeared. Underneath, she was wearing a gray skin-tight outfit that left little of her figure to the imagination. 27 asked if that would be more appropriate, but realized Lewton was staring agape at her and asked if something was wrong. Lewton coughed awkwardly and explained he was just thinking that oufit might attract a different kind of attention. Looking down, 27 noted that was no good either and asked innocently if she should deactivate that too. Confused for a moment, Lewton quickly realized what she meant and immediately told her not to and that she would be fine as she was, they'd just have to stay off the streets. He was beginning to realize that, despite her unbelievable combat skills and weaponry, the woman was almost childlike in her naivety. 27 then asked him to please lead the way and inquired as to his name. Lewton introduced himself as Lewton Slade, private investigator at her service. And so, his dealings with the strange woman from another world began. End of episode 1.
