Half-Spartan#11: “Rise and Shine”

In a void, the G-Man says rise and shine. Master Chief calls Amy's name and asks if he can open his eyes now. Amy tells him that'd probably be a great idea. Master Chief is trapped by a barnacle, a ceiling-dwelling creature who captures prey with its tongue. Master Chief panics and asks what did Amy do. Amy, grabbing onto him, tells him he walked right into it. Nearby, a scanner watches curiously. Later, a Hunter-Chopper is chasing after Master Chief and Amy, who run from its bullets. Master Chief says hurry, behind those boxes. They huddle behind some wooden crates. Chief says this is ridiculous, he's almost died more times than any other time, then asks where they are anyway. Amy says they're near the canals and explains it's the only safe place, as they know where their apartment is. Chief sarcastically says yes, safe, then points out he knows how this will work. He describes the chopper breaking through those boxes and Chief will be shot thousands of times just for the laughs. He says he's been doing this long enough to know, but Amy interrupts, saying something will save them. Immediately, the Hunter-Chopper is destroyed with a massive explosion, as someone asks if they are alright down there. Master Chief says yeah, never mind. Amy looks up and sees two men standing nearby, one of whom holding a rocket launcher. It's their old neighbors Salvatore and Conrad, although Salvatore now calls Conrad Bernard. Bernard says he saved Master Chief just like in his dreams.

Salvatore tells Bernard there's no way Master Chief can be mad at them for telling him he's not real now. Master Chief and Amy approach and Chief asks that they refresh his memory, inquiring who the two of them are. Salvatore quickly says he's never met them but they lived in the same apartments for a bit. Salvatore explains they moved down in the canals with a Resistance group and, luckily for them, just as Salvatore and Bernard arrived, the group was raided. Salvatore says they fought back but there were too many so they grabbed what they could and got out. Bernard strikes a pose as Salvatore explains they have fought many Combine and Bernard has killed them with his bare hands, calling him a war hero. Master Chief points out you can't become a war hero without a war. Salvatore says they've been down in these canals for weeks and if Bernard says he's a war hero, he's a war hero. Amy asks if she says she's the queen of the canals, does that make her the queen of the canals. Salvatore asks if that really is an important question, to which Master Chief grabs him and shoves him against the wall repeatedly, telling him if Amy wants to be queen of the canals she's the queen of the canals. Salvatore screams okay repeatedly. Amy and Bernard watch this silently as it happens.

Amy asks Bernard if she isn't a war hero and if he shouldn't jump in there and save his friend. Bernard simply states he'd rather be a war hero than a casualty of one. Master Chief tells Salvatore to prepare for the most painful punch to the gut he's ever felt for mouthing off. Meanwhile, in a train in City 17, the G-Man says that the right man in the wrong place can make all the difference in the world and tells Mister Freeman to wake up, wake up and smell the ashes. The end.
