Lou Collins: Man of WarIssue 1: Firefight

One month after the fall of City 17, a trio of rebels are on a balcony overlooking a City 17 street. A male rebel has a large sniper rifle mounted to the handrails of the balcony. A female refugee points at the street and tells him look, they're right there, then asks if he can't just shoot them. Below them is an old derelict car serving as cover for two men and a Combine Overwatch soldier, with another soldier lying dead nearby. The refugee shouts that they can't be more than thirty feet away and demands the rebel just fire the gun already. The rebel explains that that is a Barrett M82 heavy sniper rifle, which they brought to take out some armored targets. He tells her its range is measured in kilometers, not feet, and he needs to adjust his scope to even hope to hit the blind side of a barn. The woman protests that he's bound to hit them from there. Annoyed, the rebel tells her sure, let's just waste precious fifty caliber anti-material ammunition by hoping for the best. He sarcastically adds it's fine with him and shoots randomly. The bullet hits the ground behind the car, in sight of the two men hiding behind the car. One of them, a smartly-dressed man called Lou Collins, tells another, a Combine colonel, that he's got to admit this isn't the best VIP treatment he's ever had.

Lou Collins tells the Combine colonel that old car no longer feels safe and suggests they move before they end up like the sidewalk, to which the colonel replies he couldn't agree more and that the soldier will cover them. Collins and the colonel make a run for it while the Combine soldier gives them suppressing fire. The colonel exclaims that he thinks he saw a grenade launcher. Another rebel on the balcony holding a grenade launcher fires a grenade at them, which explodes behind them and kills the soldier. The colonel barely makes the leap behind another car for cover where Collins is crouched. The colonel says told you and Lou Collins replies he hates it when he's right. Meanwhile, the rebel woman says that if the other rebel's got the scope ready, now would be a good time to shoot. Aiming with the sniper rifle, the rebel replies that he knows. He shoots, perforating the old car and hitting the colonel in the back, killing him instantly.

Lou Collins makes another run for it as rebels fire at him. He fires back with his automatic rifle, hitting one rebel in the leg and causing him to scream son of a bitch. Collins turns a corner into an alleyway and checks behind him, unaware that an older rebel lies in wait ahead. The rebel aims his handgun at Collins and tells him he's done enough running for one day, then suggests he make the smart move and drop the gun. Collins drops his rifle and tells him fine, adding that the war is drawing to a close and he knows when to quit. Smiling, the rebel tells him that's why he liked working with him before the war, he always was a smart man. The rebel adds he just never knew when to shut up and hits him in the back of the neck with his handgun, knocking him out. End of issue 1.
