Lou Collins: Man of WarIssue 2: Back in the Saddle

February 12, 2011, 10 months after the Seven Hour War. A Combine Hunter-Chopper descends onto a helipad as the pilot radios that this is Lima Tango One and they are requesting permission to enter the building. The handler responds affirmatively and tells them to just make sure the VIP stays in lit portions of the building so they don't run into trouble. Lou Collins and a female Combine officer exit the helicopter before it departs again. The officer asks why they are there in the abandoned city of Seattle, expending units to clear it of bullsquids and zombies. Collins replies that the building used to be his corporate HQ and when he agreed to help the universal union, getting his HQ back was part of the bargain. They enter the building, walking past a heavily armored Combine soldier inspecting dead zombies, as Lou Collins tells the officer he knows it's hard for her to care or understand, but he had a life before all that, he was a hugely successful businessman and he cannot do what he did then for the Combine now if he doesn't have his old pool of resources at his disposal. As they walk further into the building, Collins points out a room that was where he decided to go into the private sector, noting that the building is full of his history. The officer doesn't even try to hide a yawn as she replies how very interesting. Collins adds that it looks like they set up base camp in there and goes to check it out. Inside, a Combine doctor is telling an officer he is running low on medical equipment there and if they don't get resupplied soon, he's going to be virtually useless. A young officer retorts that if he's no good as a doctor, he'll pick up a gun and join the rest of us, to which the doctor quickly says he supposes he could make some splints or something. A soldier tells the officer he got a message from Unit 6 and that they found an entire colony of houndeyes in the basement and have lost contact. The officer says he doesn't know who the hell called that operation, but it all seems like a waste of time and resources and whoever it is has no idea what they're asking them to do. He asks aloud who ordered this FUBAR op anyway just as Lou Collins walks in. Collins replies that would be him.

Collins tells the Combine troops that the location is vital to research and development for the universal union troops and equipment there on Earth and that it is worth the losses. The officer snaps back that he guesses he's the guy that barred them from using explosives too. Collins retorts that the equipment in that building is the product of billions of dollars in research. The officer protests that Collins knows nothing about military operations and should have gotten someone that has experience. Collins tells him that, firstly, he couldn't be more wrong about that and, secondly, he's the first person he's met since he's been back that hasn't been afraid to speak their mind to him. He asks the man if he wants a new job as he's looking for a better adjutant. The officer asks if he's serious, to which Collins tells him he doesn't joke about these kinds of things. The officer tells him it's bound to be a better job than dying there and that he's got himself an aide. Collins says great and that he'll see him in the chopper once he finishes the inspection. End of issue 2.
