Captain’s log stardate 50732 point 2. It’s been eight months since our relaunch and despite having recorded and catalogued almost five hundred lightyears’ worth of Alpha Quadrant, we have yet to find a lead into the Combine. I’ve started to wonder if Starfleet sent us on a wild goose chase and without being able to discuss it with my crew, I feel alone in my frustration. Captain Takir stands on the bridge, surrounded by her crew. The French first officer, Commander Murrell, tells her that they say that Paris wasn’t built in a day and the Alpha Quadrant is a big place, it’ll take more than eight months to map. Takir replies that she wishes that was all they’re there to do. Murrell tells her he knows, he’s been a first officer for six captains in his career and he can tell when there’s something she’s not telling him. As she starts to say well, to be honest, a crewwoman informs her she’s getting a distress call coming from an unidentified ship in the sector. An Orion lieutenant confirms it, stating the call is saying something about an attack on their home planet by an unknown force. Captain Takir orders them to lay in a course, warp 8, and engage. As they reach the location, the captain asks for an update from her lieutenant, who replies she’s reading one life sign, very weak. Captain Takir contacts Doctor Narlo to greet their guest in Transporter Room 2. At Transporter Room 2, Narlo orders them to energize. A man appears and immediately collapses on the floor. Narlo examines him and informs Captain Takir their guest is suffering from Sigma radiation poisoning. Takir asks if he can help him and Narlo replies yes, he’ll be fine once he clears his system. Takir tells him to send the man to the briefing room once he’s able.

Later, Captain Takir thanks their rescued guest for seeing them so soon, but time is of the essence and asks what happened. The man tells her his planet was attacked by aliens and, before last week, they thought that they were the only ones in the galaxy, until aliens calling themselves the Universal Union attacked them on a global scale. The man explains that, although unprepared for an alien attack, his people have been in a 200 year war and he thinks they surprised them with their level of resistance. He then tells Takir his ship was launched in hopes of finding someone that could help and they have a special anomaly that allows probes to travel faster than light, obviously, by the look of his ship, they hadn’t tested anything big yet. He begs her for her help, to which Takir responds they’ll come to his planet and see what they can do, then sends the man for a check-up with the doctor. After the man leaves, Commander Murrell angrily asks Takir if she has forgotten the prime directive, noting that they are pre-warp and besides that, they know nothing of who attacked them. Takir curtly tells him she’s made her decision. Murrell retorts that her decision could get this crew killed and they’ll know it. Takir notes that, since protocol 12-alpha has been activated, she can tell him their mission. She hands him a datapad that she says lays out exactly what they must do and threatens that, if he disagrees, she’s going to be forced to relieve him of command. Later, as the two enter the bridge, Captain Takir orders the lieutenant to set a course for Cloudius IV, maximum warp. The lieutenant turns to Murrell and asks commander. He retorts she heard the captain and she says aye, course set.

Captain’s log, stardate 50743 point 0. We’ve reached Cloudius IV where a pre-warp civilization has come under the attack of Combine forces. Honestly, I was expecting a space armada, but things are eerily quiet. There’s a suppression field of sorts over the planet, so I’ve dispatched a shuttle to act as a buffer for transporting the away team. The shuttle lands on the grounds of a city and a team of four led by Commander Murrell, who tells the ensigns to remember they’re there to make first contact with the Combine forces first and those people second, they’re not there to fight. They cross a war-torn street full of corpses both local and Combine and Murrell dryly notes that, from the looks of it, they’re a little late for the fighting anyway. The Orion lieutenant examines a body on the ground and notes he’s dead and so is everyone else around here. Murrell notes they need to find a living member of the Combine and make contact, then states it'll be faster if they split into teams. He and a female ensign make their way together as he messages the others that, despite the mission objectives, he wants their phasers ready to go, as anyone capable of this on a planetary scale probably won’t be happy to see them. As the lieutenant questions why they’re really there in the middle of a warzone, a Combine soldier in the corner tells his team to wait.

Commander Murrell replies to the lieutenant that he wishes he could, then exclaims sacré bleu as two Combine soldiers pop into view and fire at them. Murrell shoots back and hits one soldier as he runs, while the ensign with him drops to the floor. Elsewhere, the lieutenant calls the captain to tell her they’re under attack and the commander is not responding, they need a transport now. They rush to the transport as a Combine gunship makes chase, then soldiers point up at it as it flies off. Captain Takir tells the chief to get them out of there, but she replies there’s a problem with the shuttle and she can only get the lieutenant’s team back to the ship.

Captain Takir orders the chief to energize the transporter. As the lieutenant and an ensign materialize, Takir asks the lieutenant where Commander Murrell is. The lieutenant retorts that they need to get out of there now and, judging by what they encountered, they’re both probably dead and if they don’t get out of orbit, they’ll all share the same fate. An officer calls the Captain to join them in the bridge. As Captain Takir arrives, she asks for the ship’s status. An officer replies that it’s grim, a massive ship appeared from behind the local moon and captured them in a tractor beam of sorts. Another officer, Johnson, reports that the ship isn’t in their databanks. Takir clarifies it’s Combine in origin and asks how do they escape. The other officer tells her they have no conventional shielding, but their amor makes transporting and weapons moot. Johnson states there’s a field similar to the one around the planet and if they send a shuttle in, she can take a team in to disable their core. Takir asks if there are any better options than infiltrating an invasion ship, to which the ensign tells her no. Captain Takir tells Johnson to prep her team and good luck.

Captain’s log, supplemental. I’ve dispatched a shuttle capable of breaking the energy barrier to augment our transporters. If all goes well, our chief engineer will be able to disable their dark matter core. An officer tells the captain he’s been able to hack their lower level security and has opened up a cargo door and disabled security in that area. The Federation shuttle arrives and a team of five, including Johnson and the Orion lieutenant, are transported in. Johnson tells the others it looks like they were transported just outside of the core bulkhead. She adds that the good news is they’ve bypassed the bulk of their defenses, but then notes that the bad news is that there’s a lot already there as Combine troops spot them and an announcement echoes stating attention all units, intruder alert. As the Combine put alert protocol Alpha in effect, meaning all units are authorized to kill on sight, the Federation team backs down into a room and Johnson tells them to hit that button to close the door. The Orion lieutenant asks what the situation is.

Commander Johnson explains to the Orion lieutenant that she’s locked that room down, but it’s not the one she needs to disable the core. She states the control room is up that ladder, but notes there’s no reason for everyone to go and the shielding is thicker there, so if she transports the rest of the team now, it’ll allow for a better one-person transport later. The lieutenant retorts that she doesn’t like leaving people behind, but Johnson replies it’s that or they all die in the core implosion. As Johnson climbs up the ladder, the lieutenant informs the Intrepid they have three to beam up. As Johnson examines the core, she tells the Intrepid it’s a lot less stable than she thought and she won’t have to do much there. The Intrepid tells her to do it fast as they’re sending an assault team to the shuttle and if that goes, she’s stuck there. The Combine approach the Federation shuttle to intercept, disable and destroy while Johnson works, stating she’s almost done.

A Combine Strider destroys the Federation shuttle in their bay just as Johnson calls the Intrepid to beam her up now. With no response, she calls again. Meanwhile, at the Intrepid, an officer informs Captain Takir that the transporter room couldn’t break through the barrier. The Orion lieutenant states that she hates to be cold, but the tractor beam is gone and the Combine ship is starting to list, so they need to leave now. Takir replies agreed and orders an ensign to get them out of there, maximum warp. The USS Intrepid flies away from the massive Combine dreadnought.

Captain’s log, stardate 50743 point 8. With the Combine ship well out of range, we can finally make contact with Admiral Newton to report a less than friendly first contact. Captain Takir explains to Newton that the Combine are real and, more importantly, a threat to the Federation. She reports she lost four crew members escaping from a single ship, including her first officer and chief engineer. She gives her official recommendation that they send in the fleet to neutralize this threat before it reaches Federation space. Newton replies he’d like to, but the fleet has been diverted to Deep Space 9 as, as of today, they are at war with the Dominion. Takir notes DS9 is orbiting her home planet and asks if it is alright. Newton replies no, Captain, it’s a warzone. Takir asks if they should return to Federation space, to which Newton tells her no, one ship won’t make that much of a difference there and they can make an impact where they are. He orders them to do what they can to stop the Combine alone, for now. He declares their mission has really just begun and wishes Captain Takir good luck and Godspeed. Elsewhere, a Combine alien officer approaches Commander Murrell, who is still alive, and asks what have we here. She orders the troops to take him to processing. End of episode one.
