Rosetta FallenChapter 3: Death Before Purgatory

A Godsent guard watches as Samuel and Tom's helicopter arrives and announces they're back. Meanwhile, Emma and Rosetta have arrived at a staircase that leads into a cabin. As they climb up, Rosetta asks if that is the Vault that is going to protect her, stating that it seems a little simple. Emma tells her no and to follow her outside. As they exit, she tells her that is the Vault. In front of them is a concrete fortress, which Emma explains was built twenty years ago in case of an unforeseeable catastrophic event, which she supposes you could call theirs such. Emma notes with irony that, at the time, they were worried about early hints of a thing called global warming. Emma explains that the Vault is not exactly what they say it is, as that is only one third of the Vault and they used a second part to monitor the locations of space shuttles and ships and a lab deep in the mountains, aptly named Purgatory, the place between there and the monitoring station. As they walk across a bridge towards the Vault, Emma adds that all she has to do is pull some levers and enter a few codes and they'll have an express way to Purgatory. At that time elsewhere, Tom explains to Godsent that they followed the light trail but once they got there it was too late, the angel had already fled, and they returned as soon as they lost sight of the Light. A Godsent agent asks about Emma and Jonas, to which Tom replies that when the sky ripped open Jonas lost his footing and fell off the catwalk they were on at the time and snapped his neck. As Tom starts to talk about Emma, Samuel cuts him off and says that Emma betrayed them and demanded that angels were there to save them. To Tom's surprise, Samuel reveals that he put a tracker on Emma before she got away and it's back in the helicopter. Samuel tells them if they get moving they can track her down and possibly the angel as well. The Godsent leader, John, turns to another member, Nathan, and tells him to go get the new spitter as they're going to kill the angel. The other Godsent agent tells Samuel he's going with him.

Back at the Vault, as Emma activates their ride to Purgatory, Rosetta interjects to ask if she believes in God. Emma asks her if that's a trick question, which Rosetta denies, telling her she knows their kind and their answers and there are only to answers to her question. Emma tells her God and she never got along very well, she just didn't feel that God could be real, some big, powerful old guy watching over them as they destroy themselves, so she devoted her life to science and teh study of human behavior, believing that there is something in them beyond a God. Emma calls it karma or something else, but notes that then Rosetta's kind started falling out of the sky. Rosetta tells her that their science and religion are one and the same, both having one absolute answer, which to religion is God and to science is the big bang theory, both claiming the other a lie but mankind has rarely strayed too far from original believes. Rosetta notes that, no matter what they believe in, something is going to kill them: God will return, the sun will explode, the same thing. Rosetta concludes by calling humans simple. Emma stares at her for a moment, then says that she believes in something more powerful, which doesn't mean it's God, something that moves them, becomes them. As she starts to conclude her reasoning, she hears a helicopter approaching and realizes that the others didn't break readio silence. As the helicopter approaches, Emma tells Rosetta she needs to get out of there and tells her to go around back, go down the stairs and head for the broken-down helicopter, where there will be a tower where she can hide while Emma stays and gets the doors open. As the helicopter approaches the Vault, the Godsent agent accompanying Samuel jumps down with a hellsplitter in hand. As he points it down, the man tells the angel to say hello to God if she makes it back to him. However, the splitter suddenly backfires in his hand, throwing the helicopter off balance. Rosetta screams Emma's name as everything shakes, then falls down. Rosetta narrates that a bird with broken wings is much like her, she makes the jump and hopes it's no far, but even if it isn't, there's always that sinking feeling that without your wings there's really no way to survive. The helicopter swings down and crashes, causing another explosion. Rosetta lies on the floor, bleeding from the head, as smoke comes out of the debris. End of chapter three.
