Rosetta FallenRosetta Fallen logo.Chapter 6: Revelations

In the tunnels, Emma sits with Thomas' body lying on her legs. She talks to him, asking if he remembers the night that all begun, reminiscing how he turned to her and said none of that mattered anymore. She notes he said that far too often for it to mean anything, but today she believed him for the first time in a long time and, in his arms, she felt all of it fade away. She recalls how life was so trivial back then, then says to look at her cradling his lifeless body in her arms, the man she was to marry, the man she was to grow old with dead. She angrily asks who she is to question what matters, calling herself just another pawn in the game they chose to play while their king tells them where to move and when to sacrifice. Close by, Rosetta asks Cynthia what a machine is going to do. Cynthia retorts that she can't think and suggests that maybe if she gave her some time to figure it out, then she might answer her. Rosetta heads towards Emma and sits down next to her, asking if she is going to be alright. Emma looks at her and asks if she has ever thought about her purpose, clarifying that she means her real purpose and not the one Cynthia has been telling her about. Emma asks if she has ever thought about everything that has happened right under her nose or what side they're all really on. Emma then says she didn't, not until today, the day she lost the man that told her it was all okay. She says it's not really okay and she should know, everyone knows except for Rosetta. Rosetta replies that it's in her design not to remember and that's all she really knows. Cynthia smiles as she declares she's got it and tells the rest she just has to go through the final safety procedures and it all will be done. Then, a man in a gas mask with a hellripper in his hand walks in from a tunnel and tells her he doesn't think that's going to happen, declaring that the angel is coming with him. She recognizes him, saying she didn't expect to see him so soon and that the angel is theirs. She adds that the man can turn back around and tell that to John or die there. Rosetta retorts that she's not hers. The man mocks Cynthia, saying that maybe she should have told the truth. As the man approaches her, Cynthia shouts at Emma to get Rosetta out of there and that she's not going anywhere, but Emma simply tells her he's right. Emma stares in shock at this, then the man grabs her neck and aims his hellripper at her face. He says maybe it's time the angel finds out exactly what's going on there since it seems Cynthia has left out the details. He orders Cynthia to tell her, but she refuses, so he decides to tell Rosetta himself. He reveals Cynthia has been lying to them and that, some years ago, they discovered something deep underground, so deep, in fact, that it was at the center of the planet. They made the ultimate mistake of trying to discover its origins, only to discover their own. He tells Rosetta that Humanity is a security system and they're on their last leg. They were put there to protect what rests deep beneath them: the Mother. Humans, he explains, were created to hold a Key. At first, many held the Key, but as Humanity spread, the Key became a rarity. All in the design to make it nearly impossible for it to be recovered. The only way for the Mother to be unlocked would be to bring all pieces together as one. On New Year's Day, the Key holders were unified and the backup was set into action. Cars, machines, cell phones, clocks, everything stopped working, all in an effort to slow the inevitable: an invasion. The man points out their enemy is not completely natural and that the system was set to stop for only a week and the Heavens would fall. The angels were guardians of what lies deep beneath them and their mission was to secure the Mother, the imprisoned leader of their enemy, but something went wrong, maybe centuries of hibernation or a flaw in the design, but most were killed on impact and the world fell into chaos. The man also reveals that the Godsent were created by a man known only as John from followers who were mostly those who had religious ties before the falling and were taken down a path of lies. John, he explains, is not a man, simply a reincarnation of something far more sinister, and anyone who opposed the Godsent were killed on sight, but now that They have shown up, things have changed and the world they once knew is gone, the Godsent is nothing more than John now. The man adds that not even he believes a single word he says and never has, but when it came to picking sides, Godsent had the guns. The man calls Rosetta the last chance that the world has at not being torn in half and that the human species is doomed, set to extinct but their purpose has been fulfilled. Cynthia apologies to Rosetta as the man tells Rosetta she still has a purpose and all they can do now is make sure she makes it. The man explains that that Vault can only be opened by its creator and anyone else that tries to open it will be destroyed, as well as anyone else who is within the area, something Cynthia knew. He invites Rosetta to come with him and he will explain everything on the way and how the Godsent and Hove Lily are the same in the end, different means to the same end. Rosetta agrees to go with him. After a moment's hesitation, as she holds Thomas' head in her hands, Emma declares she is going to and leaves his body behind. As she walks, Emma takes one last glance back at Cynthia, who stares back without a word. End of chapter six.
