Where Are The Murderers?Part 2: Awakened Memories

Laslow and the defective Combine assassin are walking past a water tower from White Point. Laslow thinks to himself how he always had doubts about the intelligence of the Combine and that the suppression field is by far their most thoughtless invention. He wonders if the Combine thought that they would make people more obedient by suppressing the human sex drive and notes that all that it's done is make a lot of people angry and frustrated, which isn't a good combination if you're trying to dominate a planet. As he keeps walking, the assassin obediently following him, Laslow notes it doesn't really bother him, he never had much interest in sex even before the invasion, as he finds killing people is just so much better. He suspects that many people like himself chose to join the Combine, but he can't agree with their reasoning, as the combination process removes human emotions, turning people into drones, making enjoying the act of taking life impossible. He looks back at the woman and thinks of her as the perfect example of the results of Combine conditioning, pointing out that if he told her to kill herself, she would do it without a single moment of doubt. As he leads her, a creature behind a car nearby starts moving. Laslow feels that something is wrong and looks over. After a moment, a few headcrab zombies get up from the ground and growl at him. A fast zombie suddenly roars and jumps at him, but Laslow fires his submachine gun at the headcrab, killing it and its host. He looks around and finds himself surrounded, thinking to himself he didn't anticipate this as there have never been zombies along this route before. He reflects that guns really aren't his forte, but taking on a zombie with a knife is comparable to suicide. He then looks over his shoulder at the Combine assassin and recalls Katy telling him not to give her a weapon. He reflects that right now, a cybernetically-enhanced assassin is exactly what he needs and if things get out of hand, he can just kill her and deal with Magnusson being pissed later. He holds a handgun in front of the woman and orders her to take it. She grabs it and suddenly comes to life, staring at Laslow angrily and telling him it's about damn time. She sprints ahead in Combine-enhanced super-speed with a smile on her face. She leaps to the side and fires the gun three times, killing three zombies in the process, then finishes off the last one by shooting it over her shoulder. She then aims the handgun at Laslow and asks him how that was. He smiles and notes she can talk and it changes things. Still aiming at Laslow, she suggests he drop the gun as it really doesn't suit him. He complies and she notes that now it's just like that night. Laslow asks her what she's talking about and she asks back if that bullet in his head messed up his memory or something. Laslow then recognizes her and comments that it's no wonder the scar on her head looks familiar. In a flashback, the Combine assassin, Unit ZK Seven, is aiming a sniper rifle at refugees and radioing that she located three targets in the insurgent camp. As she surveils the camp, one of the refugees, Laslow, gets up and grabs a woman in a chokehold, then stabs her in the back. Another man stares in shock and screams at him what he's doing, but Laslow simply smiles and swiftly cuts his throat. Above, the assassin reports that one of the insurgents is acting oddly, having just killed his two comrades and then leaving the area. The assassin declares that there is a possibility that he is a Combine double agent and moves to investigate further. ZK leaps down and takes out her handgun, ordering Laslow to freeze. He looks back and tells her she should have shot im when she had the chance. Laslow tosses his knife at ZK and ZK fires at him. The bullet and the blade cross each other, the former hitting Laslow in the forehead and the latter hitting ZK in the middle of her mask. Back in the present, ZK notes the Resistance didn't find Laslow's body, so she always had hope that he survived. Laslow points at his own head and comments with a grin that that bullet is still in there. He then asks the assassin if this is round two, but she replies that she actually wanted to thank him, as it was his knife that freed her from the Combine and made her realize what she wanted most of all. She says she wants Laslow to show her again the way he killed those people that night. Laslow asks why she would want that and she looks down for a moment, then tells him it was the most beautiful thing she has ever seen. Laslow bursts out laughing, then tells her he will play her game. ZK Seven lowers her gun and approaches Laslow, introducing her codename and telling him she doesn't remember her name before that. They stare at one another as Laslow thinks that, for the first time in his life, he feels like someone understands him. He points out the irony of trying to kill her but instead ending up making her like himself, and that it must be fate that we met again like this. As the two walk away, a slender man in a blue suit holding a briefcase watches them, then says that he thinks not that it was fate, Mister Morgan. End of part 2.
