Where Are The Murderers?Part 3: Rules and Games

At the Resistance's White Forest base, Laslow Morgan wonders about recent rumors of Gordon Freeman appearing in City Seventeen. He thinks of how people are hailing him as some sort of returning hero, but Laslow is not so sure, as Freeman killed over a hundred US Marines, countless Xen aliens and an alien emperor during the Black Mesa Incident. Laslow notes that Freeman has a higher body count than any other human alive and someone who could do that without flinching isn't normal and would have to be someone a bit like Laslow. As he walks across the base, Laslow ponders how many people like himself may exist in the world, as he has only ever met one other, and it's a new sensation for him knowing someone who truly understands his feelings. Laslow reaches a security room where another rebel is keeping guard on the Combine assassin ZK Seven, who is sitting in a dentist chair motionless. Laslow thinks of the irony of the only person who accepts him for who he is being an ex-Combine who he once tried to kill. He's not sure if he can trust her and going along with her game is like playing with fire, but he reasons there's one thing about fire: it's fun. The guard watching ZK notices Laslow and asks what he is doing there. Laslow points out the guard has been stuck there for hours and suggests he take a break while Laslow covers the rest of his shift. The guard happily takes his suggestion, thanking Laslow, who replies no problem. As the guard leaves, Laslow thinks of how ridiculously easy that is, and that, facing a threat like the Combine, people forget that humanity has always been its own worst enemy. Laslow deactivates the security cameras watching ZK and enters the cell. He grabs her arm and puts a pistol in her hand, reawakening her. She smiles and tells him she was beginning to think he had forgotten about her, then adds that she's beginning to get really sick of having to be a part of Magnusson's experiments. She complains that not being in control of her own body is incredibly frustrating and tells Laslow she'd really like to kill Magnusson, who replies she knows they can't do that and that he explained the rules to her, which would put them both in danger if she broke them. In a flashback, as a strange figure watches them, Laslow explains to ZK his rules, telling her he survived this long by following them and if she wants to work with him, she needs to follow them as well. Laslow lists his rules: one, never kill anyone important, because people tend to notice when a well-known figure goes missing, two, never kill twice in one week, unless the opportunity presents itself, as people disappear all the time around there, but if too many people vanish, it starts to look suspicious, and three, only kill in a safe environment, where there's no chance of being discovered by anyone. Laslow then asks her to give him that gun back, she protests that she will lose control of her body without a weapon, but he asks that she bear with it for a few days. Back in the present, ZK says fine, she will play by Laslow's rules for now. She aims the gun at him and tells Laslow not to forget she saved him from those zombies and he owes her. Laslow smiles and tells her to keep believing that if if makes her feel better, at which she laughs. Later, Laslow approaches a fellow rebel and asks if he has a minute. He replies that he's just about to head out on patrol and asks if it can wait. Laslow wishes him good luck out there. The man thanks him as he turns his back to Laslow, but Laslow puts him on a chokehold and sarcastically replies he's welcome. The rebel regains consciousness later in another place, with a radio lying next to him. Someone over the radio tells him to pick it up. The rebel angrily asks what the fuck is going on. On the other end, Laslow replies that he picked him to take part in a little game he's playing, then explains that he and his friend decided to have a competition to see who's the better killer, so he's going to run around and they're going to hunt him. As ZK overhears it over the radio with a smile, Laslow adds that he locked all the exits, but maybe he missed one, so he shouldn't let that put him off trying to escape. Laslow tells the rebel to try to stay alive as long as possible as he doesn't want it to be over too quickly and wishes him good luck. The man starts to run as he screams shit. Laslow declares let the games begin. End of part 3.
