Where Are The Murderers?Part IV: Killers Past and Present

The rebel who Laslow kidnapped his running for his life in a decrepit tunnel in White Forest. He tries to open a door but it's locked. Over a speaker, Laslow tells him that it's futile and that he told him he sealed all the exits, but then adds that, as a reward for being so persistent, he will tell him something good. Laslow says he accidentally left the silo hatch open and that, if the rebel gets up there, he might be able to escape. Hearing this, the rebel sprints away. Over the radio, ZK sarcastically notes that wow, she did not realize Laslow was such a generous person. Laslow replies that maybe it's because he's having so much fun. As he smiles, Laslow thinks to himself that he hasn't had this much fun in a long while and that, for him, killing has always been a solitary act, so this is a new experience. The thrill brings back memories to him of when he was 21 and the portal storms hit. He had already killed three people by that time and, from a young age, he was aware that something was broken in him, as the things which normal people found entertaining were of no interest to him. The loss of a conventional government and police system only made it easier for Laslow to enjoy his particular form of entertainment. In the early years, he stayed in the city, where he found a plentiful supply of victims, but found it so easy that the act became less and less stimulating, until two years earlier, when he was presented with an opportunity to join the Resistance, which he did partly to help defeat the Combine, but mostly because he had to get out of the city, as the place was suffocating him. He travelled from base to base, leaving only corpses behind him, until eventually his path led him to the night he met ZK. In that moment, faced with his own death, he felt a thrill like no other and thought it was a pity that, as a Combine, she could not feel the same sensation as him. Somehow they both survived and were able to meet each other again. Laslow notes that fate seems to have a truly twisted sense of humor. Meanwhile, the rebel races past ZK without noticing her. She smiles and reflects that Laslow was right, it definitely is fun. She reflects that she killed many people, but never like this before, the first time she has been able to feel the thrill. As a Combine, she had only the barest minimum level of self-awareness and has no knowledge of who she was before she joined their ranks or the circumstances that led her to give up her humanity and have most of her organs replaced with synthetic machinery. She killed as ordered, without question or emotion, not thinking that it was fun because she couldn't, as her implants would not allow such a useless feeling, until the night that everything changed and she was taken to Black Mesa East. Laslow's knife damaged the Combine implants, removing their control over her. The scientists at Black Mesa East were able to partly repair her body, but could never return her to being fully human. ZK notes that she now has a chance to show the person who freed her how much she changed and she won't disappoint him. The rebel reaches the silo, but is cornered by Laslow, who tells him this is as far as he is going to get. Laslow slowly approaches with his knife as he notes that ZK isn't there yet and so this round goes to him. Suddenly, ZK shouts from above as if she would let that happen. She leaps down at the man, putting her foot on his chest and aiming her handgun right at his face. The man stares at her in shock for a moment before she fires. His body falls down the shaft and into the water below. ZK has a wicked smile on her face as she asks a shocked Laslow what he thought of that. He smiles and calls her a show-off. End of part 4.
