Where Are The Murderers?Part V: The Hand of Fate

As he walks in the White Forest garage, Laslow thinks to himself that things have changed recently, with the uprising well underway in the city and White Forest having started preparing for war. Laslow notes that, with everyone on high alert, it will be harder for him to go about his activities undetected, and if it was just him, he could simply move on to another place, but he's not alone anymore. He reaches the room where ZK is kept, as Doctor Magnusson and Uriah the Vortigaunt conduct tests on her. The guard acknowledges Laslow, who asks if there has been any progress. The guard replies that he can't be sure, explaining that Uriah is trying to read her mind with his vortigaunt senses, but he doesn't seem to be getting anywhere. Laslow thinks that that is relieving to hear, as it would be incredibly inconvenient for him if what she knows came to light. Magnusson and Uriah head off, the former complaining that that was completely unproductive and a waste of his time. Before they leave, Uriah looks at Laslow and growls at him. Laslow notes that vortigaunts don't like him and the feeling is mutual, adding that he's not sure what level their telepathic abilities extend to and he tries to keep his mind as blank as possible, but maybe they can still sense something is wrong with him. Magnusson orders Uriah to hurry up because he can't afford to linger there when there are more important things he could be doing. Uriah leaves, never taking his eye off Laslow. The guard gets up and points out his shift is up, inviting Laslow for beers later. He leaves and Laslow turns off the security cameras, then heads into the cell where ZK is immobile. He tosses her a gun, which she grabs in mid-air. Laslow points out she's getting better at that and she replies that somehow her condition seems to be improving, as she doesn't have to be holding the gun anymore, it just has to be within reaching distance. Laslow notes that maybe he should get her a holster for it, that way she could walk around without looking suspicious. Meanwhile, outside, the man in the blue suit with a briefcase approaches the security cameras and taps a key. The screen springs back to life, recording Laslow talking to ZK. Laslow tells her he's not sure how much longer they will be able to stay there, as due to the increased security they can't risk killing anyone else. ZK protests she's not sure how much longer she will be able to tolerate Magnusson's conceited attitude without some kind of release soon, as she's getting pretty sick of being a lab rat. Laslow asks her to bear with it a little longer and he will come up with a plan to get them out of there. A little later, the guard comes back in and figures Laslow must have left already, so he checks the camera feed to see what he missed. He reacts in shock at the recording. Later, as Laslow sits in his bed, an announcement asks that he come to the control room because Doctor Magnusson has a mission for him. Laslow heads to meet Magnusson, thinking to himself he doesn't have time for missions right now, then realizes he could use this, since if he simply doesn't return from the mission they might think he was dead, although there is still ZK to consider. When he reaches the room, he sees Magnusson and the guard together and realizes something isn't right. He looks to the side and finds ZK standing with a rebel aiming a gun at her. Laslow wonders why she is there and then realizes they know. He asks himself how do they know and wonders where he messed up, then, discreetly grabbing his gun, tells himself to calm down and that he can still get out of this, he just has to kill the ones with the guns. The guard notices Laslow reaching for his gun and aims his submachine gun at him, calling him a sick fuck and telling him not to move. Magnusson orders Laslow to drop his gun, so he reluctantly does. Magnusson adds that he drop his knife, knowing Laslow would be carrying it. Laslow drops his knife to the floor. Magnusson orders the guard to restrain Laslow. Laslow and ZK exchange looks, then Laslow tells Magnusson he made one critical mistake. Magnusson asks what's that. Laslow smiles and replies that Magnusson assumed he only had one knife, as another knife slids down from his sleeve. Laslow swiflty cuts the guard's neck, then ZK quickly knocks the gun out of the other rebel's hands, grabs it and shoots him. Magnusson stares in shock and raises his hands as Laslow and ZK smile. Laslow approaches Magnusson with his knife, who protests that he can't kill him because he's too important. Laslow notes that, regretfully, he has to agree with him on that, but adds that the great thing about the human body is that a lot of bits come in pairs and he's sure Magnusson could save the world with just one eye. Magnusson begs him not to and declares he will do anything Laslow wants. Soon after, ZK leads the way dual-wielding submachine guns while Laslow follows, holding Magnusson as a hostage. They reach a group of rebels and Laslow orders Magnusson to tell them to move aside, which he does. The trio move past the rebels, ZK covering their backs, and approach a four-wheeled drive. Laslow sarcastically thanks the doc for his cooperation and shoves him aside. Laslow and ZK speed away in their vehicle. A medic asks Doctor Magnusson if he is all right and he rudely shoves him away, telling him he's fine and to get off him. Magnusson demands that somebody please tell him that they have a tracking device on that car. A rebel replies affirmatively, telling Magnusson they are receiving a signal from it now. Magnusson declares that Laslow and ZK will pay for making him look like a fool. Laslow and ZK's vehicle drives away, with Laslow noting that, although it was ahead of schedule, they still managed to escape, so no loss there, but he can't help but feel that fate seems to be playing games with us. Meanwhile, the mysterious G-Man watches them as they drive off. End of part 5.
