Where Are The Murderers?Part VI: Other Investments

After the explosion of the Citadel, the G-Man observes in annoyance as Vortigaunts surround him in a void of darkness and take his pawn Gordon Freeman away, then declares that we'll see about that and that he has other investments. Meanwhile, in the outskirst of White Forest, Laslow Morgan and ZK have holed up in a derelict shack. As ZK sleeps, Laslow narrates that it's been two days since they escaped from White Forest and have kept moving, putting as much distance between them and White Forest as possible. As he looks over at ZK, Laslow notes that earlier that day, they heard the sound of a distant explosion and the ground shook with the force from it, with them experiencing minor tremors ever since. Laslow wakes ZK up, who asks what is it. Laslow tells her he's been thinking about that explosion and that, other than a nuclear detonation, the only thing that could produce that kind of force is the Citadel's dark energy reactor. ZK notes that if that's true, then it means that the Citadel has been destroyed and wonders who could have done that. Laslow replies rhetorically who does she think, then explains that there is only one man in the world with the skill to penetrate the Combine's most heavily guarded fortress and destroy it from the inside out, the single most lethal human in history: Gordon Freeman. ZK points out that he says that like he's envious of Freeman, to which Laslow smiles and retorts that maybe he is, just a little bit. ZK adds that there is one way they could know for sure if the Combine's systems are down. Laslow asks if she means mating and replies that he doesn't have any interest in things like that. ZK looks away and explains that she never got a chance to experience it. Laslow tells her that he did, before the Combine put up the suppression field, and that he didn't like it very much compared to murder, it was just so unsatisfying. A vehicle carrying rebels suddenly approaches their hideout. Laslow and ZK both overhear it and stand alert, Laslow pointing out that it seems they will have to continue this conversation later. Heavily-armed rebels exit the vehicle and approach the building, as one reports back via radio that they have arrived at the tracking signal's location and Laslow and ZK have to be somewhere in this area. From White Forest base, Magnusson tells the rebel to make sure they kill them, as they can't leave dangerous people like them running around. Laslow watches from the window as the rebels approach and tells ZK that it looks like five of them. ZK smiles and notes that they never come in even numbers, to which Laslow calls them inconsiderate bastards. A rebel spots the vehicle Laslow and ZK stole and deduces they must be hiding in the building nearby. A rebel calls out to Laslow, asking if he can hear them, then tells him that he and that Combine bitch are dead. The rebels start firing on the shack. ZK and Laslow dive for cover, the former pointing out that these guys were smart enough to shoot first and Laslow replying that it doesn't mean they'll survive for longer though. Suddenly, one of the rebels grabs a grenade and declares fire in the hole, then tosses it through the window. Laslow spots it and screams oh, shit. The explosion within the shack is enough to blow the door from its hinges. The rebels approach the burning building as one of them notes there's no way they survived that. A rebel inspects the building and notices there are no bodies, then spots another open door. Outside, Laslow is holding his arm, thinking to himself that he wasn't fast enough to avoid getting hit, but a wound like that isn't enough to stop him. Laslow rushes the rebel and slices his throat, then starts stabbing another rebel repeatedly. At the same time, ZK leaps from the ceiling, firing both a submachine gun and a handgun, thus killing two rebels. One last rebel fires an AR2 pulse rifle at them, but Laslow throws his knife into the man's chest, killing him. Laslow and ZK surveil their handiwork, then ZK asks if Laslow is okay, pointing out his arm. He tells her it's just a shrapnel wound and he will be fine. He grabs his knife from the dead rebel's chest and they start to leave. ZK looks at Laslow and tells him she thinks he's right, this is better than sex. ZK asks where do they head from there and Laslow notes they should go west. Suddenly, time freezes as the G-Man stands right behind them and tells them he's afraid that he has other plans for them. End of part 6.
