The author states that a lot of people have asked him what Worse than Life means, only to immediately correct that with no, they haven't, and adds that the following is what Worse than Life means. It means handing over even money so you won't bother the clerk too much, as we see a clerk handing AJ Rimmer some change and Rimmer apologizing and suggesting he buy something else so it evens out. It means hiding outside your door so you don't run into anyone you know in the stairwell. It means feeling smug when you see bombed out houses on TV. It means apologizing for what you are and what you feel, as Rimmer declares to a girl he loves her, then apologizes right after. It means imagining snipers aiming for you from every rooftop when you're out walking. It means having really good friends, as we see a friend telling Rimmer he's a fantastic friend, then Peter approaches and asks who Rimmer was talking to. Rimmer replies no one and Peter asks if he was pretending to have a friend again. Rimmer says yeah and comments sadly that he almost seems real sometimes. And finally, the author states, it means giving up, as we see a glimpse of Rimmer hanging from the ceiling. The end.
