Team LifeChapter 1: Wrong Men in the Wrong Place

The Heavy from the blue team of Team Fortress 2 is laying on the ground unconscious in a white void. A voice-over talks to him, saying he's not supposed to be here and he's quite the character. The Heavy wakes up, confused.

The Heavy lifts his head and sees the mysterious G-Man, a blue-suited intergalactic bureaucrat from Half-Life. The G-Man notes the Heavy's mind is fascinating but quite hollow. The Heavy angrily questions if the G-Man just called him stupid.

The G-Man notes that lack of intelligence isn't necessarily equal to one's potential but adds that it is not the point. He explains that somehow the Heavy has managed to displace himself severely and in the process relieve the G-Man of his greatest asset, Gordon Freeman. The Heavy gets up, telling the G-Man to stop as his head is hurting, and tries to grab the G-Man but just walks right through him, while the G-Man merely sighs in frustration.

The G-Man tells the Heavy to listen well, that he may have potential and that he has big shoes to fill. He notes that the wrong man in the wrong place also makes all the difference in the world. As the G-Man tells the Heavy to wake up and smell the ashes, a shout of Heavy's name cuts him off.

The Heavy wakes up screaming in a train. He is next to the Medic from his own team, both wearing denim clothing instead of his usual blue uniforms. The Medic tells the Heavy he's been sleeping for hours. The Heavy asks what happened and where are they, to which the Medic explains they got on a teleporter but instead of the exit, they ended up somewhere else. The Heavy says the red Spy did this and he will kill him, but the Medic notices they have just arrived. The Heavy asks where and the Medic simply replies precisely.

The Heavy and the Medic exit the train, the Medic leading the way. Medic says that, if they hope to return to their world, they must first explore this one. Heavy asks what he means by world as they leave the platform of the City 17 train station from Half-Life 2.

As they walk through the train station, Medic asks Heavy if he hasn't noticed everything is different here and reasons that there are people and they can breathe, so it must be Earth, but from a different universe. Heavy asks Medic where they'll go and Medic says that first they get out of the train station, as the police is making him nervous.

Medic explains they got onto the teleporter and woosh, then they got captured by soldiers with a curious appearance, stripped of their gear and clothes and put them on the train to the city. Heavy says he feels like kettle and Medic corrects him to cattle, but agrees. They get into a line and Heavy complains that it is not moving.

Heavy says they must push but Medic notes he's not even sure they should want to be in line. Heavy turns to the citizen behind him and demands he explain. The citizen awkwardly explains the Combine must have wanted them to relocate to this city for some reason. Heavy is confused so the citizen explains the Combine are the creepy fellas with masks and uniforms and alien technology who own the planet now. Medic realizes it was an alien invasion and is excited by the prospect. A Civil Protection officer then tells them to move.

A metro cop with a stun stick then tells Heavy and Medic to stop. He notes the two do not have ID numbers. His colleague tells him to just ship them to Nova Prospekt but the metro cop says they must be properly catalogued. The colleague pushes Medic to the Nova Prospekt station but the other metro cop reprimands him. He replies telling the metro cop, Kyle, to stop being a little bitch and Kyle argues he'll report him to Overwatch.

As the two metro cops, Kyle and Steve, argue, another Civil Protection officer tells Medic and Heavy to follow him if they want to live. Medic tells Heavy to go, Heavy asks him if they can trust the metro cop, Medic replies he has no idea. The Civil Protection officer leading them says they can trust him and to get into a room so he can explain.

Inside the interrogation room, the Civil Protection officer removes his mask and tells Heavy and Medic his name is Barney and he's working undercover in Civil Protection trying to help as many people as he can. He explains he can give Heavy and Medic directions to nearby hideouts where the people would help them, but someone starts banging on the door.

Barney tells Heavy and Medic to get into a room quickly and head up a ladder, then keep going until they reach the plaza. Barney tells them he'll try to catch up with them and Medic thanks him for his kidness, then pushes Heavy into a window. Heavy falls hard and then Medic falls on top of him.

Heavy angrily tells Medic he is stupid and he apologizes with a laugh. They run and soon after find a guard covering the only way through. Medic walks in front and tells Heavy to stay focused and look like he's meant to be there. Heavy takes a moment then makes a goofy, unconvincing face.

Medic puts on a sweet and accent-less voice, telling the officer good day and that they're just passing through. The masked guard stares at them for moments while the Medic tries to keep a smile on his face, but starts sweating from nerves. The guard pushes an empty can to the ground and tells Medic to pick it up. Medic says why yes, of course.

Medic picks up the can, then the officer orders him to put it in the trash. Medic gently drops the can into the trash. Another moment passes and then the officer says they can go and chuckles. Medic sighs in relief.

Upon exiting the train station at last, Medic is momentarily shocked by the dystopic sight of the Combine Citadel and the screens that typically project Doctor Breen's broadcasts. He notices Heavy is on the verge of tears and asks him what's wrong. Heavy sits down on the stairs and cries, saying he misses his gun, Sasha, so much and feels so light without her. Medic reassures Heavy that he will do whatever it takes to bring them back home and expects no less from Heavy. Medic then jokes whether Heavy would rather sit there and cry some more.

Heavy cheers up with a big laugh and hugs Medic, saying they will go find guns, then find Spy, kill Spy and after that make him send them back home. Medic says that's an excellent plan and both get going, wondering which way they should take, while two citizens nearby wonder what's with them.

Meanwhile, the broadcast screen above them glitches ominously for a moment, looking awfully like the face of the Spy. The comic ends with a message: To be continued in chapter 2, Unnecessary Attention.
